I learned that if I want to get into the Graphic Design program at the local community college, I am going to have to have my portfolio ready by mid to late November =X Which means that I'm really going to have to kick into graphic mode if I want to have a nice and diverse collection of graphics for the college to look at. This isn't because the college accepts applicants this early in the year only, it's because a lot of people try to get into the program, so your best chances of getting in are to submit everything early.
